The conditions of water and the desire of human beings to dissolve the Self can be read into the suite Scenes I – IV. The motif of a man immersed and posing in water can be said to represent the dream of leaving the body. Is the man voluntarily on the bottom of the sea as a way of experiencing sensory intoxication and repressed eroticism or has he become entangled in the Deep and is himself responsible for his exposed situation? In what way is the water a symbol for self-extinction, disappearing and dissolving?
